Net flattens 'Pop' seg as part of 'Morning' revamp
NEW YORK — CNN is planning to cancel its ayem pop culture and entertainment report, “90 Second Pop,” as part of its revamp of “American Morning.”
Daily seg features CNN pop culture correspondent Toure, humorist Andy Borowitz and a rotating cast of magazine editors dissecting entertainment topics such as the big opening weekend for the latest “Star Wars” pic, Tom Cruise in love and the “Desperate Housewives” season finale.
Move is part of a broader repositioning of “American Morning” as a newsier alternative to softer shows on network TV.
A CNN spokeswoman declined to comment.
The cabler replaced “American Morning” co-anchor Bill Hemmer with Miles O’Brien in the shakeup of the ayem show. Hemmer ankled the network rather than take a job as White House correspondent.
CNN U.S. prexy Jonathan Klein said the change was meant to improve the “chemistry” with co-anchor Soledad O’Brien.
Miles O’Brien told TV Guide the new, newsier version of “American Morning” won’t do cooking segments or concerts, like the network morning shows. “I think some of the other shows have skewed over to the fluff side,” he said.
