‘Betty’ hopes to beautify Dutch Talpa

Sudser to start airing in Netherland in January

FremantleMedia will adapt telenovela “Betty la fea” (aka Ugly Betty) for John De Mol’s new Dutch channel Talpa.

FremantleMedia-owned Dutch shingle Blue Circle will produce the planned 200 episodes, which will start airing in the Netherlands in January.

It follows the successful adaptation of the sudser by another FremantleMedia production arm, Germany’s Grundy UFA, which produced “Verliebt in Berlin” for SAT1.

The German version bowed in February and consistently ranks No. 1 in its timeslot, Fremantle said.

“Betty” was originally produced in Colombia by RCN and became an international sensation, exported around Latin America and to other territories worldwide.

Soap follows a brainy but plain economist of humble origin who takes a job as secretary at a fashion house and falls in love with the owner.

“Talpa is the perfect home for ‘Betty la fea,’ ” said Monica Galer, managing director of Blue Circle. “The show is sure to bring the channel great ratings and a loyal audience.”
