'Little,' 'Wing' among TV award nominees

LONDON — Two of British TV’s cutting-edge comedies, the BBC’s “Little Britain” and Channel 4’s “Green Wing,” will fight it out at this year’s British Academy of Film & Television Arts TV awards.

Both have been nominated for the comedy performance honor, while hospital caper skein “Green Wing” is up against veteran “The Vicar of Dibley,” “Black Books” and “Nighty Night” in the sitcom category.

“Little Britain,” a huge seller on DVD, is competing against “The Catherine Tate Show,” “Harry Hill’s TV Burp” and “‘The Mark Steel Lectures” for the comedy program or series nod.

Contenders for actress kudos are Brenda Blethyn for “Belonging,” Lia Williams for “May 33rd,” Anne-Marie Duff for “Shameless” and Ana Maria Marinca for “Sex Traffic.”

In the actor category, nominees are Benedict Cumberbatch for “Hawking,” Rhys Ifans for “Not Only but Always,” Michael Sheen for “Dirty Filthy Love” and Mark Strong for “The Long Firm.”

Paul O’Grady, Ant & Dec, Stephen Fry and Paul Merton have been nominated in the entertainment performance category.

Rory Bremner and Julia Davis are nominated in the comedy perf category.

“Bodies,” “Conviction” and “Spooks” (known as “MI-5” Stateside) compete for drama series alongside “Shameless.”

Awards will be presented April 17 at London’s Theater Royal, Drury Lane.
