Alphabet tops TCA nominations

'Housewives' nabs five noms, including show

See Nominees

ABC dominates the nominations for the 2005 TV Critics Assn. Awards, with strong showings by frosh faves “Desperate Housewives” and “Lost” helping the net rack up a leading 11 mentions. Fox is close behind with eight, while usual TCA fave HBO settled for seven.

Five noms for “DH” repped the best for any individual program this year, with the show garnering noms for comedy, new show and program. Thesps Teri Hatcher and Marcia Cross were both nominated for individual achievement in comedy.

HBO’s seven noms reps exactly half the number the cabler snagged last year, and the first time since 2002 the net hasn’t led the TCA nom tally. Only one HBO series, “Deadwood,” was nominated; net’s other noms came in the longform category.

Two of HBO’s biggest guns, “The Sopranos” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” were not eligible for nomination this year.

ABC’s “Lost” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” were right behind “DH” with four noms apiece, while Fox’s “Arrested Development” — which last year led the noms with five — snagged three this year.

Fox’s other noms included “24” and newcomer “House.” Critics also showed some final love to “Everybody Loves Raymond,” nominating the CBS laffer for comedy and putting up Ray Romano for individual achievement in comedy.

As usual, critics showed a soft spot for underdogs, nominating UPN’s “Veronica Mars” for new show and series star Kristen Bell for individual achievement in drama.

In addition to “DH” and “Mars,” other frosh skeins nommed for show of the year include Fox’s “House,” ABC’s “Lost” and FX’s “Rescue Me.”

Critics also rewarded a ratings resurgence for the WB’s “Gilmore Girls” by nominating the show for comedy.

Indeed, in another sign of the ailing state of the sitcom, “Raymond” was the only traditional multicamera laffer to get a nom in the category. Two shows (“Gilmore,” “DH”) are hourlong skeins, “The Daily Show” is a talkshow, and “Arrested” is a single-camera comedy shot on film.

Critics will select a career achievement award recipient from a list of nominees that includes Tom Brokaw, Bill Moyers, Bob Newhart, Aaron Spelling and Oprah Winfrey.

CBS latenight host Craig Ferguson will open the 21st annual TCA Awards, to be handed out July 23 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
