ABC Family a real circus

Net wrestles with 'Mud'

ABC Family is teaming with Sandy Chanley and Doug Shaffer for “Mud Show,” a comedy about disgruntled circus performers.

Chanley most recently exec produced the Showtime comedy “Fat Actress” and produced two seasons of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Shaffer was a writer for “Weakest Link.”

Cabler separately has greenlit original “Initiation of Sarah,” a sorority-set horror movie to air during ABC Family’s October franchise 13 Nights of Halloween in 2006.

In “Mud Show,” performers and staff of a dilapidated one-ring circus attempt try to get along with a new owner — the grudging, estranged son of the previous owner. Chanley and Shaffer are writing the pilot script, which Keith Truesdell (“Fat Actress”) will direct should it move forward. Chanley, Truesdell and Tom Bull will exec produce.

ABC Family has been circling comedy projects for more than a year. Cabler has two pilots under series consideration: Gale Anne Hurd and Steve Tao’s “Breadwinners,” about career women dealing with less successful significant others, and “Just a Phase,” revolving around a teen who’s beginning to question his sexual preferences. Channel also has a deal for an animated series from the New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast.

“Initiation of Sarah” is a remake of the 1978 ABC telepic about a sorority sister with supernatural powers she uses against rival houses. Dan Berendsen (Disney’s “Twitches”) wrote the script. Project is out to directors and cast; production will begin in January.
