‘Truth Lies’ in final cut

A look at the latest Variety screening

WHAT: Variety Screening Series unspooling of “Where the Truth Lies” Monday

WHO: Pic’s Kevin Bacon and Rachel Blanchard, scribe-helmer Atom Egoyan and producer Robert Lantos

WHERE: The ArcLight in Hollywood

LET IT BE: The sexually graphic whodunit has been dealing with an MPAA ratings controversy since it was stamped with an NC-17.

“Contractually I was to do an R-rated film,” Egoyan explained. The MPAA tagged four scenes and, in an effort to get an R, Egoyan “trimmed the head and tail.”

But he wouldn’t remove and couldn’t trim a pivotal menage-a-trois scene, leading ThinkFilm and Egoyan to release the pic unrated in a “take it and shove it” protest.
