West is best for BET

Usher, Keys take R&B trophies

Kanye West took home the statues for video of the year and male hip-hop artist Tuesday at the BET Awards ceremony at the Kodak Theater.

Usher was named top male R&B star while Alicia Keys took home the female R&B trophy.

First-timers Ciara and John Legend won as well, she for her collaboration with Missy Elliott and he for new artist.

Destiny’s Child won for best group; Remy Martin nabbed female hip-hop honors; and Donnie McClurkin was deemed tops in gospel. Regina King and Jamie Foxx nabbed acting honors, and Serena Williams and Shaquille O’Neal were honored as top athletes.

Fugees members Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras reunited to perform “Ready or Not” and “Killing Me Softly.” Other performers were Stevie Wonder, T.I., Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, Toni Braxton, Ludacris, Missy Elliott, Omarion, Mike Jones, Fantasia, Tye Tribbett and the Game.

Gladys Knight received the network’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Denzel Washington and his wife, Pauletta, were presented the BET Humanitarian Award.

Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith were hosts.
