UMG in a karaoke duet

Disc sales projected to top $50 million this year

Universal Music Group has entered into its first distribution deal with a karaoke label, Sybersound, which produces “Party Tyme Karaoke” and other lines of instrumental versions of hit songs.

Propelled in part by the success of television shows such as “American Idol,” the home karaoke business has grown rapidly. The National Assn. of Music Merchants estimated retail sales of karaoke discs will top $50 million this year.

Sybersound is a privately held record company based in Malibu that produces dance remixes, karaoke content and original records. It’s considered the largest supplier of karaoke software.

“We’ve found that our karaoke CD+Gs are being purchased primarily by soccer moms for their families,” said Sybersound prexy-CEO Jan Stevens.
