Chum redubs music channels

Razer, PunchMuch take over MTV nets

MONTREAL — Canuck broadcaster Chum Television will relaunch MTV channels MTV Canada and MTV2 as Razer and PunchMuch, respectively, on June 30.

Wednesday’s announcement comes a month after MTV decided to exit the local market. MTV had started the two channels with Calgary-based Craig Media in 2001, but MTV’s contract with Craig had a clause allowing MTV to nix the deal if Craig was ever sold. Craig was acquired by Chum in late 2004.

Razer and PunchMuch will complement Toronto-based Chum’s existing music channels, MuchMusic and MuchMoreMusic.

Razer will target the 12-24 demo and will cover music, movies, gaming, sports and leisure. It will air “World Famous for Dicking Around,” “High School Project USA,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

PunchMuch will be an all-request musicvideo service.
