Strong Sunday boosts weekend box office tallies

A strong weekend at the box office got even stronger Monday when studios released their final tallies, pushing the frame’s total business to $164.4 million, 7% better than the total for the same weekend last year. Though studios normally revise their Sunday estimates down when they release actual totals on Mondays, every film in the top 10 was adjusted up in final figures this time. Warner Bros. raised the weekend take for B.O. champ “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” to $56.2 million, nearly $1 million higher than its $55.4 million Sunday estimate. That makes “Charlie” the year’s largest Friday opener, surpassing last week’s $56.1 million bow for 20th Century Fox’s “Fantastic Four.” New Line’s “Wedding Crashers” saw the biggest increase, jumping to a $33.9 million opening, nearly $2 million higher than $32.2 million estimate.
