‘Wicked’ tuner is bewitched

Cast injury puts the witchy show on hold

TORONTO — “Wicked,” the road’s next tuner behemoth, did not kick off its tour Tuesday as scheduled in Toronto.

Stephanie J. Block, who plays Elphaba, the wicked witch, suffered a minor injury during rehearsal, preventing her from performing the tour’s first preview on Tuesday. The performance was canceled and reskedded for Sunday evening.

Producers of “Wicked” expect Block to return in a few days. The actress made her Broadway debut last season, playing the role of Liza Minnelli in Hugh Jackman starrer “The Boy From Oz.”

Kristy Cates covers the Elphaba role in Block’s absence. Perfs begin today at the Canon Theater. “Wicked” opens in Toronto March 20. Tour also plays Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, among other cities.
