Theater League’s Bernstein will step down

Former LATP prexy to pursue producing

NEW YORK — Jed Bernstein, prexy of the League of American Theaters and Producers, will ankle at the end of the 2005-06 theater season.

Bernstein, who has served as head of the Broadway producers and presenters union since 1995, has no concrete plans, but aims to pursue producing and marketing projects, not limited to theater.

“After a decade with the league, you would think I’d know better than to want to produce,” said Bernstein, who began his career in advertising.

During his tenure, he represented the org in a series of labor negotiations with the industry’s trade unions and guilds, including the contentious talks that broke down with the Broadway strike of 2003. He also integrated road presenters into the league, whose more than 500 members comprise general managers, and theater owners and operators, and helped pilot Broadway through the fiscal downturn that came in the wake of 9/11.

The league has yet to begin a search for Bernstein’s replacement.
