Boyd will helm show at new Barrington Stage theater
Galt MacDermot’s rarely produced musical “The Human Comedy,” based on William Saroyan’s 1943 novel, will open the 12th season at Barrington Stage in its new theater in Pittsfield, Mass., formerly the Berkshire Music Hall.
Artistic director Julianne Boyd will helm the show, which was most notably produced by the Public Theater in 1983 and transferred to Broadway the following year. The Berkshire theater run will be June 22-July 15.
Boyd’s summer theater company attracted attention for its premiere in 2004 of the musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” which later moved to Broadway, and a well-reviewed 2005 revival of “Follies.”
“Human Comedy,” with book and lyrics by William Dumaresq, will be choreographed by Lara Teeter with musical direction by Darren Cohen, who also worked with Boyd on “Follies.”
The original Broadway cast of “The Human Comedy,” directed by Wilfred Leach, featured Rex Smith, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Delores Hall and Donna Murphy.
