McSweeny to helm ‘Dr. Sex’

Ethan McSweeny (“Gore Vidal’s The Best Man”) has stepped in to direct “Dr. Sex,” a new Off Broadway musical, currently in previews. Original helmer Pamela Hunt (“Musical of Musicals: The Musical”) has left the production, citing creative differences.

McSweeny will receive no official credit, and no director will be listed in the program. The show, a comedy about the life of Dr. Alfred Kinsey, is skedded to open Sept. 20, but might delay a day until Sept. 21.

The open secret is officially no longer a secret. Disney Theatrical Prods. announced that “Tarzan” will follow “Movin’ Out” into the Richard Rodgers Theater, where previews will begin March 24 for a May 10 opening. “Movin’ Out” shutters Dec. 11.

A gaggle of Broadway thesps has signed on to perform in the National Alliance for Musical Theater’s 17th annual Festival of New Musicals, a two-day tuner marketplace for industry invitees only Sept. 25 and 26.

The cast lists of the eight new musicals on display include Stephanie D’Abruzzo (“Avenue Q”), Celia Keenan-Bolger (“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”), Hunter Foster (“Little Shop of Horrors”), Fyvush Finkel (the original production of “Fiddler on the Roof”), and, perhaps shopping for their next gig, three members of the cast of “Lennon,” Terrence Mann, Will Chase and Julia Murney.
