‘Magnolias’ ends July 31

'Steel' curtains close after 136 perfs

The Broadway production of Robert Harling’s play “Steel Magnolias” will play its final performance July 31. Production will have played 23 previews and 136 regular perfs.

Play received mixed reviews and did not get any Tony nominations. Its weekly grosses generally stayed in the low $200,000s, never surpassing $300,000. Last week the gross hit a new low of $159,937, and paid attendance made up only 43.6% of capacity.

A touring production of the play is still planned for the 2006-07 season.

Production, directed by Jason Moore, stars Delta Burke, Christine Ebersole, Rebecca Gayheart, Marsha Mason, Lily Rabe and Frances Sternhagen. Show began previews March 15 and opened April 4.
