Two touring productions, “Caroline, or Change” and New York Opera’s “A Little Night Music,” garnered the most attention from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle, which announced its nominations and special awards for excellence in Los Angeles and Orange County theater for 2004.
“Caroline” nabbed seven noms while “A Little Night Music” took home six. The two will compete for the top production award against South Coast Rep’s “Cyrano de Bergerac,” Simon Levy’s “Exits and Entrances,” Musical Theater West’s “Hot Mikado” and the Black Dahlia Theater’s “Theater District.”
Among local productions, the Fountain Theater preem of Athol Fugard’s “Exits and Entrances” secured five noms and Pasadena-based Boston Court’s “Light” received four. The national tour of “Hairspray,” which played the Pantages, also secured four.
With three noms each are the Black Dahlia’s staging of “Theater District,” Musical Theater West’s “Hot Mikado,” the Antaeus Company’s “Chekhov X 4″ and Roundabout Theater Company’s “Intimate Apparel” (presented by the Center Theater Group’s Mark Taper Forum).
In the Special Awards category, local thesp Dakin Matthews is a double honoree, receiving the Margaret Harford Award for sustained excellence in theater and the Ted Schmitt Award for world premiere of a new play, “The Prince of L.A.”
Departing Center Theater Group artistic director Gordon Davidson has been accorded the LADCC Lifetime Achievement Award.
The 36th annual awards ceremony will take place March 21 at West Hollywood’s Coronet Theater.
