'Lion King,' 'Wicked' will headline new season

Broadway heads west as four family tuners bow at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music for Kimmel Center Presents Broadway at the Academy series.

Disney’s “The Lion King” and “Wicked” will headline the 2005-06 season for the series, with “Annie” and “Doctor Doolittle” filling out the kid-friendly sked.

“Our new season is very much geared toward families,” said Janice Price, prexy-CEO of the Kimmel Center. “We are ecstatic to be welcoming two huge Broadway shows, a brand new touring musical and a classic favorite to the Academy stage.”

Talking-animal tuner “Doolittle” opens the third season on Sept. 21, running through Sept. 25. “Annie” hits the stage from Nov. 22-27, closing the curtain on 2005. “Wicked” kicks off its limited run March 22, 2006 (through March 26), with “Lion King” bowing June 8 and giving its final perf June 18.
