Jones’ sickness pulls ‘Pond’ plug

Production closes after 19 previews, 93 reg perfs

That provisional closing notice at “On Golden Pond” is now a real one. Due to the continuing illness of lead James Earl Jones, the 2005 revival of Ernest Thompson’s play will shutter Sunday.

Suffering from pneumonia, Jones has been out of the show since June 15. Earlier this week, the producers posted the provisional notice with hopes that the actor would recover in time to begin perfs next week. Doctors’ reports Thursday dashed those hopes.

With Jones out seven of eight perfs, receipts during the week through Sunday dropped $54,642 for a final tally of $162,052.

The production will have played 19 previews and 93 regular performances.
