Jones’ illness drains ‘Pond’

Doctor to determine if he is ready to return next week

The Broadway revival of “On Golden Pond” will shutter Sunday if ailing star James Earl Jones does not look ready to return to the show next week. Producers have posted a provisional closing notice for June 26.

Jones, who has pneumonia, has been out of the production since June 15. Later this week, the actor’s doctors will determine if he is ready to return next week. If so, the closing notice comes down. If not, “On Golden Pond” will shutter, having played 19 previews and 93 regular performances.

In Jones’ absence, the role of Norman Thayer is being played by Charles Turner. Leslie Uggams co-stars.

Last week, with Jones missing seven of eight perfs, the B.O. tally for “Pond” came to $162,052, down $54,642 from the previous session.
