Honoree: Catalina Sandino Moreno

International star of the year

In her first film, “Maria Full of Grace,” Catalina Sandino Moreno wowed everyone from Sundancers to Oscar voters (she was nommed for best actress) this year for her role as a Colombian heroin mule.

Far from her character’s situation, Moreno was attending advertising courses and performing in a play in a small theater in her native Bogota when she grabbed the attention of a talent scout for “Maria” director Joshua Marston.

Moreno, who now lives in Gotham, hopes to do theater there soon. “I want to prove to myself, and to a lot of people, that I was not just lucky to have gotten the nomination,” she says.
