‘Girls’ goes to Williamstown

Aylesworth, Baker among all-femme topliners

HOLLYWOOD — Williamstown Theater Festival has put “Top Girls” on the fast track.

All-female ensembler, written by Brit playwright Caryl Churchill (“Far Away”), features a cast from film and TV as well as theater. Toplining are Reiko Aylesworth (“24”), Becky Ann Baker (“Assassins”), Brienin Bryant (“Law & Order”), Jessica Hecht (“Friends”), Laura Heisler (“Hair”), Ellen McLaughlin (“Angels in America”) and Elizabeth Reaser (“The Sopranos”) .

Directed by Jo Bonney (“Fat Pig”), play explores women’s progress in the workplace. After a dinner party celebrating the promotion of Marlene (Hecht), five women weigh in on the sacrifices they made in order to rise to the top.

“Girls” was originally staged at the Royal Court in 1982 and won an Obie Award in 1983. Play runs on Williamstown’s Main Stage July 20-31.
