U. breaks from Actors Studio
New School U. has split with the Actors Studio, the org that has run the university’s drama department for nearly 11 years, and created the New School for Drama.
Robert LuPone, co-artistic director of Manhattan Class Company, will be interim director of the drama school. Helmer Arthur Penn will be an artistic adviser.
Like the Actors Studio, the new drama school will offer a three-year MFA in acting, playwriting or directing.
New School’s drama program pre-dates the university’s affiliation with the Actors Studio. It began in the 1940s, when German director Erwin Piscator created the Drama Workshop.
