Dempsey cast as ‘Mr. Roberts’

Production opens March 12

WASHINGTON — Michael Dempsey has been cast in the title role in the Kennedy Center’s revival of “Mr. Roberts,” which opens March 12 for a three-week run. The Robert Longbottom-directed play also features Frank Deal, Hunter Foster and Stephen Kunken in lead roles.

“Roberts” is being staged by the center as part of a celebration of arts of the 1940s, a six-month festival to be partially underwritten by the Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation. Called “A New America: The 1940s and the Arts,” it will be the largest festival in the center’s history and will include music, dance, theater and film.

Dempsey (“Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” “The Matchmaker”), also played Tom Joad in the PBS production of “The Grapes of Wrath.” Deal (“The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told,” “Three Sisters” and “Othello”) will play the captain, while Foster (“Little Shop of Horrors”) will play Ensign Pulver. Kunken (“Proof”) will play Doc.
