Legendary acting couple Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis will receive the lifetime achievement award at the 2005 Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts. Hosted by Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, R.I., the Pell Awards are a tribute to Sen. Claiborne Pell and the arts.
Dee will accept the award June 24 on behalf of herself and her late husband, who died in February.
In addition to numerous acting appearances on stage, screen and TV, Dee and Davis were known for their involvement in political activism, ranging from their opposition to Sen. McCarthy’s Communist witch hunts to their efforts on behalf of securing equal rights for all.
Now in their ninth year, the Pell Awards recognize artistic excellence in Rhode Island and the New England region as well as on the national level. Throughout his career, Sen. Pell supported the arts; he sponsored the legislation that established the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities in 1965. He also served a four-year term on the board of Trinity Repertory Company.
