Cruz goes ‘Boom’ at Rubicon

Opening night set for Nov. 19

Wilson Cruz returns to “tick, tick … Boom!,” in which he starred Off Broadway, in the Rubicon Theater Company’s first production of its eighth season. The Ventura company presents the West Coast premiere of Jonathan Larson’s pop rock musical Nov. 17-Dec. 18, with opening night set for Nov. 19.

Scott Schwartz, who directed the tuner this summer in London, helms the production, which also stars Natascia Diaz and Andrew Samonsky.

Christopher Gatelli (“Altar Boyz”) is the choreographer; musical director is Brent Crayon.

Set and costume design is by West End designer David Farley, who designed sets and costumes for Schwartz’s production in London. Lighting is by Jeremy Pivnick.

Production coincides with the nationwide release of the film of “Rent,” for which Larson posthumously received the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award.

“tick, tick,” which preceded “Rent,” is the semi-autobiographical tale of a man trying to write the great American musical before his fast-approaching 30th birthday. Larson wrote the book, music and lyrics; David Auburn (“Proof”) was brought in by Larson’s family after Larson died of an aneurysm after the final dress rehearsal of “Rent.”

The Rubicon is at 1006 E. Main St. in Ventura’s Downtown Cultural District. For tickets, call (805) 667-2900 or visit http://www.rubicontheatre.org
