B’way takes hit by storm

Weather blows down box office

Broadway recovered from the previous week’s snowstorm. Receipts, however, failed to skyrocket after so low a blow to the box office.

Twenty-five shows brought in $12,325,216, up only $402,309 or 3.37%. Gotham legit did better in 2003 and 2004 when the tallies for this time frame came to $12.49 million and $13.35 million.

The first storm of 2005 caused record lows at many shows during the Jan. 10-16 frame. In comparison, last week’s rebound looked decent but not great. Several productions continued to languish in the B.O. basement.

Under the top 10, there were modest five-figure bumps for “Movin’ Out” ($501,196), “Beauty and the Beast” ($465,463), “Chicago” ($370,491), “Democracy” ($302,105), “Rent” ($296,740), “Brooklyn” ($248,059) and “Gem of the Ocean” ($223,547), which closes Feb. 6.

Up $110,373, “Little Women” ($453,011) recuperated nicely after its heavily comped preem week. Playing to 74.9% capacity last week, the girl-power tuner can look forward someday to meeting its $843,952 gross potential at the Virginia Theater.

“Avenue Q” ($484,446) put in one of its few nonsold-out weeks. Off $2,121, the tuner played to 95.9% cap.

“Dame Edna” ($260,752) made no recovery from the storm, its receipts increasing a mere $9,907. Capacity stood at an ominous 57.2%.

“Good Vibrations” ($269,040) took the week’s biggest hit, down $47,692. Its slip could be blamed on a few factors: Thursday’s preem party, crix tix and a reduced seven-perf sked. The Beach Boys show officially opens Wednesday. In previews, “Brooklyn Boy” ($163,576) grew $3,646 as critics showed up over the weekend.

In their final week, “Wonderful Town” ($502,476) rose the most, up $128,519; but the Roundabout’s “Pacific Overtures” ($325,514) barely budged, gaining only $22,380.

The Roundabout’s next Stephen Sondheim offering looks to be “Sweeney Todd,” a West End transfer from the current staging there by John Doyle. An October preem is expected, but not confirmed, at Studio 54.
