'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' crash lands as sales drop
Without the holiday-weekend bump of the previous sesh, Broadway biz fell off a bit for the week ending Oct. 16. Grosses totaled $15,228,522 for 26 shows on the boards, down $183,565.
That tally is better than it’s been for the same period over the last five years, although attendance (216,145) doesn’t top the 230,659 patrons attracted in 2002, when there were 28 shows up and running.
“Wicked” ($1,281,947) continued to lead the pack, with “The Lion King” ($1,140,661) pulling ahead of “Monty Python’s Spamalot” ($1,054,345) for this leg of their neck-and-neck race.
The only straight play in the top 10, “The Odd Couple” ($880,750), moved up to No. 5 on the backs of Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. That put it ahead of the tuner that originally teamed the two, “The Producers” ($820,600) — although maybe that show will gain ground again when the trailer for the upcoming movie adaptation hits theaters Friday.
“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” which got a much-needed boost from Columbus Day and its five-perf weekend sked, registered the biggest drop of the week, down $100,564 to $526,842.
Down at the bottom end of the list, the underperformers continued to underperform. “In My Life” held steady at a low $127,308, while “Latinologues,” in the wake of less-than-glowing reviews, hovered at a dispiriting $66,761.
