A “sound play” written and directed by Charlie Kaufman and starring Meryl Streep will open UCLA Live’s season Sept. 14.
“Hope Leaves the Theater” will be performed by Theater of the New Ear along with an as-yet-untitled sound play by newcomer Francis Fregoli. Hope Davis and Peter Dinklage will appear with Streep, all of them playing multiple characters. Other actors are still being cast.
Both works will feature music by Carter Burwell performed by the eight-piece band Parabola. Foley artist Marko Costanzo provides the sound effects.
Sound plays feature the actors reading from scripts with a considerable amount of sound effects. There are no costumes, sets or props.
Theater of the New Ear will present the works at 8 p.m. Sept. 14-16. Sirius Satellite Radio, UTA and Sony Pictures are providing financial support.
