The Intl. Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, which has 25,000 West Coast members, has endorsed Los Angeles mayoral candidate Antonio Villaraigosa, who’s attempting to unseat James Hahn in a May runoff.
IATSE prexy Tom Short appeared with the councilman at a news conference last week and cited his track record supporting the entertainment industry.
“Antonio has been a true friend to the IATSE and a champion of our industry throughout his career,” Short said. “When he is elected as mayor of Los Angeles, we know he will continue to fight to keep this $31 billion industry thriving in Southern California. The IATSE will work to turn out our members in support of the candidate who has visibly worked for this industry, and that candidate is Villaraigosa.”
Also attending were IATSE business agents and reps of West Coast locals who had voted unanimously to support Villaraigosa. Representatives from locals 33, 80, 600, 683, 705, 706, 800 and 871 attended the event.
Hahn announced March 17 a $15 million annual incentive program aimed at putting the brakes on runaway production as part of his proposed 2005-06 budget.
Villaraigosa won the primary election last month with 33% of the vote. Hahn was second with 24%.
