Austin Lyric Opera unionized

Short Take

The Intl. Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees has unionized the crew at Austin Lyric Opera and at U.S. Expo. IATSE said the opera bargaining unit will cover all regular full- and part-time theatrical stage and shop employees including stagehands; shop hands; wardrobe attendants, stitchers and constructors; makeup artists; and hairstylists. The union won an election from a pool of 34 eligible voters. IATSE Local 415 of Tucson, Ariz., won the right to represent freelance workers with exhibition-display company U.S. Expo after a “card check” campaign seeking formal representation. U.S. Expo subsequently recognized IATSE as the bargaining representative and agreed to begin negotiations.
