Review: ‘Cycles of Porn – Sex/Life in L.A. Part 2’

Catching up with characters first met in 1998 docu "Sex/Life in L.A." as well as introducing new subjects, German helmer Jochen Hick's sequel finds the biz even more ruthless than eight years ago, but still luring new recruits. Too explicit for all but the most gay-friendly auds, could still work as a niche release, and will launder yet more coin through the ancillary rinse cycle.

Catching up with characters first met in 1998 docu “Sex/Life in L.A.” as well as introducing new subjects, German helmer Jochen Hick’s digitally shot sequel “Cycles of Porn” finds the biz even more ruthless than eight years ago, but still luring new recruits. Version caught (pic is offered in differently sized cuts) spreads narrative a bit too thin and is too explicit for all but the most gay-friendly auds, but could still work as a niche release, and will launder yet more coin through the ancillary rinse cycle.

Several of the new subjects live in an apartment complex where every room is viewable online. Like a perverse version of “Big Brother,” they can only keep their digs by winning subscribers’ votes. Hick observes how several become disillusioned with the porn industry, though some find love. He also catches up with affable former star Cole Tucker and his erstwhile onscreen partner Matt Bradshaw who, in the pic’s strongest segs, is seen coping with life back in Louisiana with his sister, Julie. Comic highlight is a porn shoot by “bareback” specialists having trouble with a money shot. Tech credits are adequate.
