Warner gets down with Hornby tome

Depp to produce author's latest adaptation

Warner Bros. has acquired screen rights to “A Long Way Down,” the new novel by Nick Hornby. The film will be produced by Graham King, Johnny Depp and David Heyman.

Depp’s attachment is limited to producing at this point.

As in past books such as “Fever Pitch,” “High Fidelity” and “About a Boy,” Hornby has written a comic novel about characters with holes in their personal lives.

Published Monday in the U.K., “A Long Way Down” focuses on four people who meet on New Year’s Eve and form a surrogate family to help themselves weather the difficult holiday period.

Novel will be published in the U.S. by Viking Press in June.

Pic will be a co-production among King’s Initial Entertainment Group, Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and Heyman’s Heyday Pictures. WB’s Kevin McCormick will oversee it.

“This book is brimming with… some of the most outstanding characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading,” Depp said. “The cinematic possibilities are extraordinary.”

Initial has a production deal with Depp, and the two companies are partnered with Plan B on “Shantaram,” a drama at Warner Bros. in which Depp wants to star.
