Vietnam expands plexes

First complex will be located at VinCom City Towers

Vietnam’s first two purpose-built multiplexes are being developed by MegaStar Cineplex Vietnam, a joint venture between Envoy Media Partners and publisher Phuong Nam Corp.

The new banner intends to expand to 8-10 plexes in its first phase of developing the exhib business in a country with fewer than 100 screens of varying quality serving a population of more than 82 million.

The first eight-screen complex will be located in the retail and office center at VinCom City Towers in central Hanoi and could open this fall, once permits are granted.

The second site, comprising nine screens, is being built at Hung Vuong Plaza in Ho Chi Minh City.

“We expect these complexes to quickly have a transformative impact on the entertainment market in Vietnam,” says Envoy CEO Ted Shugrue, a former head of Loews Cineplex Intl. and of Columbia TriStar Film Distributors Intl.

MegaStar also is licensed to import and distribute films in Vietnam.

Lim Enghee has been named general manager of the Ho Chi Minh City-based company, with Khai Hoang as deputy G.M.
