Beattie to rewrite vidgame adaptation

Stuart Beattie will rewrite Universal’s vidgame adaptation “Spy-Hunter,” which is to star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with John Woo directing.

Beattie received story credit on “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” As Disney did with its theme-park ride, Universal is seeking to craft a “Spy-Hunter” film around a beloved pop culture icon that doesn’t have much of a narrative component.

U licensed the vidgame from its publisher Midway.

Beattie also penned the screenplay for last year’s Tom Cruise-Michael Mann collaboration, “Collateral.” He also penned the upcoming “Derailed,” which stars Clive Owen, at Miramax.

“Spy-Hunter” is being eyed as a potential 2006 summer tentpole if production can get under way this year. Scott Stuber has been closely supervising the project. U execs shepherding the project are senior VP Dylan Clark and creative exec Drew Crevello.

Previously drafts of the “Spy” script were penned by writing teams Michael Brandt and Derek Haas as well as Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.

Producers on the project include Woo, his producing partner Terence Chang, Chuck Gordon and Adrian Askarieh. Neal Moritz and Marty Adelstein are exec producing.
