Shea script shines for shingle

Phoenix Pictures has acquired Katt Shea’s new script “The Tutor” for producers Robert Chartoff and Lynn Hendee in a low-six-figure deal. Shea (“Poison Ivy”) also is attached to direct the pic, based on Peter Abraham’s latest suspense yarn.

Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer and Anne Rodman will produce for Phoenix.

Story revolves around an affable, brilliant man who moves in with a family to help their son improve his SAT scores. After earning their trust, he then subtly exploits each household member, imperiling the family.

A Roger Corman alumna, Shea has previously made schlocker films including “Stripped to Kill (1 and 2), “Dance of the Damned” and “Streets,” all for Concorde Pictures.

Chartoff, Medavoy and Hendee most recently produced John Boorman’s “In My Country,” which was filmed in South Africa and stars Juliette Binoche and Samuel L. Jackson for Phoenix. It is set for release by Sony Classics in March. Chartoff, Hendee and Ted Ravinett will next produce “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card for Warner Bros., with Wolfgang Petersen attached to helm.

Phoenix is currently in production on “All the King’s Men,” with Steve Zaillian helming his own script, based on Robert Penn Warren’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about the life of the colorful Southern politician Huey Long.
