Russell, Dreyfuss, Rossum to star in remake
A correction was made to this article on June 14, 2005.The first wave of thesps — Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss and Emmy Rossum — have been cast in Wolfgang Peterson’s big-budget remake of “The Poseidon Adventure” for Warner Bros. Production begins June 18. Russell will play an ex-fireman and politico who is traveling with his daughter (Rossum) and her boyfriend (Mike Vogel). Dreyfuss will play a gay man who has just been dumped. Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman penned the screenplay based on Paul Gallico’s original novel and the first “Poseidon” pic. Peterson is producing with reality TV guru Mike Fleiss (“The Bachelor”) and Duncan Henderson (“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”). WB has skedded the remake for May 5. Russell will appear as Captain Stronghold in the Mouse House’s “Sky High” this summer and topline “Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story” in October. Dreyfuss has devoted much of his time of late to the stage. Rossum’s credits include “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and “Mystic River.” “Poseidon” could get some unusual competition: NBC recently announced it has snapped up an adaptation of Gallico’s original novel that had been headed to the Hallmark Channel. TV pic, starring Steve Guttenberg, Peter Weller, Rutger Hauer, Bryan Brown and Adam Baldwin, has finished shooting.
