Cinema Tout Ecran takes a high brow look at pix and programs

LONDON — Eclectic fest Cinema Tout Ecran will honor Dutch helmer Paul Verhoeven and Teuton-Gaul cultural pubcaster Arte at this year’s sesh, which unspools Oct. 31-Nov. 6 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Competish boasts world preem for Mario Fanfani’s “Une Saison Sibelius” and international preems for Haim Bouzaglo’s “Distortion” and Erik van Zuylen’s “The Mystery of the Sardine.”

Swiss preems are given to Rebecca Miller’s “The Ballad of Jack & Rose,” Lodge Kerrigan’s “Keane” and Amos Gitai’s “Free Zone.”

Among TV highlights are international preems for hit U.S. series “My Name Is Earl,” “Supernatural” and “Commander in Chief,” and U.K. series “The Long Firm.”

Fest hosts a bazaar for Swiss TV and film fare, the Geneva Select Market, and industry confabs on Digital HD: the New Video Standard? and Political Films Today.

Latter debate, staged with the help of critics org Fipresci, will be led by helmers Gitai, Peter Kosminsky, William Karel and Samir. It will take a high-brow look at movies. Artistic director Leo Kaneman said, “Viewing a film gives you the opportunity to ask yourself questions, dissect the images, think about what they represent and why they do so.”
