‘Storm’ hits Stockholm pic festival

Other fest pics include 'Allegro,' 'History of Violence'

The 16th edition of the Stockholm Intl. Film Festival (Nov. 17-27) has unveiled its full lineup of 160 pics from 40 countries, including 51 debut films.

The world premiere of Swedish sci-fi action “Storm” by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein is one of the highlights of the competition. Other competing films include Christoffer Boe’s “Allegro” from Denmark; U.S. pic “You and Me and Everyone We Know” by Miranda July; and “20 Centimeters” by Spain’s Ramon Salazar.

This year’s guest of honor, David Cronenberg, will open the fest with his “A History of Violence”; closing film is Park Chan-wook’s “Lady Vengeance.” The Korean pic is also one of the films in this year’s spotlight section, called Female Revenge. The aim of the section is to start a discussion on female violence and how women are expected to behave onscreen.

The Stockholm Visionary Award will be presented to Terry Gilliam, who will introduce three of the films that have inspired him most. He explained his choice of Ingmar Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal” by saying, “Without it, there wouldn’t have been a ‘Holy Grail.’ ”

Known for having introduced a number of the most successful Asian filmmakers to the Swedish audience in the past decade, the festival presents a strong Asian section this year, including “A Bittersweet Life” by Kim Ji-woon, Amos Gitai’s “Free Zone” and Kim Ki-duk’s “The Bow.”
