‘Sith’ has a ball in Gaul

'Episode III' racks up record B.O. in France

French moviegoers said “tres bien” to “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith,” as the sixth film in George Lucas’ saga opened Wednesday with a record-setting number for a U.S. release.

Fox Intl. execs said “Sith,” which opened at 938 playdates, had topped the 576,544 tickets sold on the 2003 launch day of “The Matrix: Reloaded” but did not give specific estimates. French hit “Taxi 2” remains the record holder for the territory with a single-day gross of 801,922 tickets sold.

“Sith” also opened Wednesday in Belgium and Switzerland. It will launch today, Friday and Saturday in 101 other countries, with over 9,000 prints in the U.S. and another 9,000 in foreign markets.

The distrib also said “Sith” advance sales in Mexico had set a record with 187,000 tickets sold.
