Showbox shows off at Pusan mart

Nine-day film fest fest wraps Friday

Korea’s Showbox Entertainment is using the Pusan Film Festival’s growing market to unveil a bumper slate of 14 films it is selling internationally.

Last year’s sales sheet counted only six pics. Much-expanded slate reflects Showbox’s ambition in the sector and affirms its claim to be one of Korea’s two movie industry market leaders.

New additions include world rights outside Japan on in-production romantic comedy “Now and Forever” (Yeonriji), which producer Taewon Entertainment has already sold for $3.5 million to Japan’s Pony Canyon. From the same producer it also has “Marrying the Mafia 2: Enemy in Law,” a comedy-drama that has grossed a boffo $30 million to date.

Other additions are erotic romance “The Intimate” and romantic comedies “The Beast and the Beauty” and “Mr. Housewife.”

Showbox has world rights outside Japan on romantic drama “Almost Love,” with stars Kwon Sang-woo and Kim Na-heul.

Showbox, which is one of the two largest multiplex operators in Korea and branched into content only in 2002, has become a force in the production and distribution sectors. In the eight months priorto August it had an 18% share of the distrib market.

International sales operations, headed by Judy Ahn, cover a wide range of genres.

Company also is repping Korea’s foreign-language Oscar contender “Welcome to Dongmakgol” and arthouse pic “This Charming Girl,” winner of last year’s Pusan competition.
