Select picks ‘Fire’

World Brief

New Select has taken Japanese rights to Tristan Bauer’s post-Falklands War “Iluminados por el fuego” (Blessed by Fire), which won a special jury prize at San Sebastian in September.

Pic attracted a flurry of offers from Japan, said Massimo Saidel, managing director of Spanish sales consortium Latido.

Latido has also sold Juan Carlos Cremata’s “Viva Cuba” to Japan’s Biotide.

Confirming Brazil as a growth market, Latido closed “Blessed” and “Oculto” for Brazil with California Films. Another Brazilian distributor, Europa Filmes, bought “Viva Cuba,” while Brazil’s Art Filmes bought Marcelo Pinyero’s job interview drama “El metodo” (The Gronholm Method). Mexico’s Quality Films acquired “Oculto,” a thriller/drama from Antonio Hernandez, and “Method.”
