Gilbert has stuntmen's back

Screen Actors Guild prexy Melissa Gilbert on Thursday added her voice to the many already coming from the stunt community, calling on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences to establish an Oscar category for stunt coordinators in the annual kudocast.

A spokesman confirmed that Gilbert plans to ask the SAG Awards nominating committee to consider creating a similar category for the 12th annual SAG Awards next year.

Stuntmen are SAG members.

Acad regularly gets requests for new categories, such as for casting director or title sequence, but is reluctant to add any more. The stuntmen have been requesting this addition for more than a decade.

In a statement, Gilbert said, “The time has arrived for stunt coordinators to receive the recognition they deserve for the risks they take on behalf of their colleagues and the rewards they provide to producers and moviegoers alike.

“Through incredible skill and daring, stunt coordinators provide critical safety and artistic contributions that must be acknowledged.”

Gilbert added that in the coming weeks and months, SAG officers and staff will reach out to leaders of the stunt community, as well as to the leadership of the Academy, to offer support and lobby for the creation of a new Oscar category.
