Pusan shuffles exex before topper retires

Yong-kwan to head film festival

Lee Yong-kwan is tipped to be the new head of the Pusan Film Festival, as the 10-year-old event tries to resolve its succession issues.

The nine-day fest, which wraps Friday, is headed by iconic vet Kim Dong-ho, who is expected to retire after the 2008 event. A former culture ministry official, Kim is a diplomat with enormous clout in the wider Korean industry.

Lee is one of two deputy directors alongside recently promoted Ahn Sung-ki.

Reorganization is also likely to see Ahn, a well-known thesp, elevated to chairman or prexy, a less hands-on role than that of Lee.

The reshuffle is seen as a diplomatic solution to fest’s succession issues. It also addresses rivalries between longtime programmers Kim Ji-Seok and Jay Jeon, who were among the original founders.

Pusan insiders say that Lee, who previously programmed the Korean Panorama section, is already assuming a wider role. Lee’s administrative fingerprints have been seen on nearly every aspect of this year’s preparations.
