Wright pic tops London Critics Circle Awards

LONDON — “Pride & Prejudice” led the way in the race for the London Critics Circle Awards on Wednesday with eight noms, all in the British pic and talent categories.

Pic scored heavily in the thesp stakes, with nods for Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Rosamund Pike, Brenda Blethyn and Tom Hollander.

Helmer Joe Wright picked up noms for British newcomer and British director.

U.K. indie pic “The Constant Gardener” harvested a bumper crop of seven noms, challenging for pic, helmer (Fernando Meirelles) and scripter (Jeffrey Caine), and was joined in these categories by U.S. indies “Crash” (helmer Paul Haggis) and “Brokeback Mountain” (helmed by Ang Lee).

Helmer David Cronenberg’s “A History of Violence” and Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” also collected noms for pic and helmer.

Although big-budget studio pics were largely ignored, “Kong” also garnered a nom for actress Naomi Watts.

Indie Brit pics “Separate Lies” and “Mrs. Henderson Presents” fared well, picking up four noms apiece.

“Batman Begins” and “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” took two noms each.

Among foreign-language pics, Germany’s “Downfall” scored noms for actor and script while France’s “Hidden” took an actress nom.

UIP, which released “The Constant Gardener” and “Pride & Prejudice” in the U.K., heads the Blighty distrib chart with 20 noms, followed by Pathe with 14 and Entertainment with 13.

Kudofest will be held Feb. 9 at London’s Dorchester Hotel.
