Plotting an ‘Invasion’

Horror pic Garners a producing twosome

Todd Garner and Mike Fleiss have purchased and are producing “Invasion,” based on an original script by the writing team of Drew McWeeny and Scott Swan.

Garner and Fleiss will finance the pic independently. Once development is complete, they will seek distribution.

“Invasion” is a horror movie set around a home invasion.

Garner, a founding partner of Revolution Studios who stepped down earlier this year to set up independent producing shingle Broken Road, said this film marked his first time working on a nonstudio project.

“It’s interesting, I’ve never done that before,” he said. “I’ve been in the studio system so long. I never had an opportunity to do something completely outside of the system before. It’s nice to have a chance to do something different, just on our own.”

Garner said he went to McWeeny and Swan because “they have a great understanding of the (horror) genre. And Mike, too. I’m really leaning on these guys to make sure we are trying to do something a little out of the ordinary.”

McWeeny is also known as “Moriarty,” a writer for film Web site Ain’t It Cool News. He and Swan previously teamed up to write “Post Human” for Revolution and “Clive Barker’s Dread” for Fox. They’re writing “Race With the Devil” for Regency Enterprises, which Chris Moore will direct.

Fleiss produced New Line’s remake of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and is also a producer on “Hostel,” which Eli Roth is directing for Screen Gems. He’s in production on Warner Bros.’ “Poseidon,” directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

Garner is an exec producer on Revolution’s “The Fog,” which opened at No. 1 at the box office this past weekend. He’s also producing Revolution’s upcoming “Zoom” and “Next.”
