‘Pierrepoint’ hangs at IFC

Co. picks up Pope-penned Shergold pic

NEW YORK – IFC Films has acquired helmer Adrian Shergold’s “Pierrepoint,” which made its preem at the recent Toronto Film Festival as “The Last Hangman.”

Pic, penned by Jeff Pope, stars Timothy Spall as Britain’s most prolific hangman, Albert Pierrepoint, who executed 450 people and became a minor celebrity before resigning in 1956.

IFC Entertainment prexy Jonathan Sehring said the period piece tackles contempo issues surrounding capital punishment.

“Adrian Shergold has made a remarkable and bold statement,” he said. “(‘Pierrepoint’) may be an English film, but challenges what is one of the seminal conflicts in the U.S. today.”

Pic was picked up from Capital Films and will be rolled out next year.

IFC is exec producing “Night Listener,” with Hart Sharp and producing “After the Wedding,” directed by Susanne Bier.
