Phuket Film Fest hopes to encourage tourists

ShoWest brief

Thai exhib SF Cinema City announced it would jumpstart plans to launch the Phuket International Film Festival as part of a campaign to encourage tourists to return to the resort hard hit by the tsunami late last year.

Event will take place May 26-June 5, a year earlier than first planned.

SF intends the fest to include 30 films and events and will focus on pics that were produced in the Andaman region, including Leonard Di Caprio-starrer and Danny Boyle-helmed “The Beach” as well as James Bond pic “Tomorrow Never Dies.”

Exhib also said it is continuing its plans to build a 7-screen theater in Patong Beach. New theater complex is set to be open in September.

At ShoWest in Monday, SF Cinema received the Marketing Achievement Award for Theatrical Exhibition. Prexy Suvat Thongrompo and managing director Suvit Thongrompo were on hand to accept.
