Pele contemplates ‘Escape’

Athlete starred in the original 1981 pic

Soccer legend Pele is in talks with writer Freddie Fields to create a sequel to the Fields-penned soccer-war drama “Escape to Victory.”

Pele starred in the 1981 original directed by John Huston along with Sylvester Stallone, Max Von Sydow and Michael Caine.

“I always think that I would have become an actor if I hadn’t become a soccer player,” he said. Pele dabbled in theater while in school but soccer took over by the time he was 16. At 17, he played at the soccer World Cup in Sweden for Brazil and went on to become known as the best soccer player in history.

Between games, he managed to star in a series of telenovelas as well as Brazilian and Hollywood pics. He also starred with John Huston in kiddie pic, “A Minor Miracle.”

“Pele Forever,” produced by Anima Prods and Cinearte, boasts restored footage, some of which have never been seen. Pele and Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil are in Cannes to support the docu.

“I first thought of making this docu in 1971 but it was only in 1999 when advances in digital technology allowed me to restore some archival footage I had found,” said Massaini Neto. Docu uses the motion capture process to re-create two of Pele’s most spectacular goals in 1959 and 1961.
