Studio hires Tagliavini to helm pic

MTV Films has tapped Los Angeles-based Argentine director Gabriela Tagliavini (“Ladies’ Night”) to helm “Rumble.”

The $3 million pic is about four female high school volleyball players from well-off families who transfer to the barrio school of their inner-city rivals when their private campus burns down. It’s based on the real-life experience of scribe Karol Ann Hoeffner, whose daughter and niece are volleyball players.

Pic is being produced by Pat Faulstich, Karen Firestone and Max Wong. Wong’s credits include “Bring It On” and “Tuck Everlasting.” MTV exec Loretha Jones will oversee the pic.

Cinematographer is Brazilian d.p. Affonso Beato, who has worked on various Pedro Almodovar films, and most recently on Brazilian helmer Walter Salles’ horror remake for Disney, “Dark Water.”

“Rumble” will air on MTV with an option for a theatrical release. Casting is under way and project is due to start shooting in June in L.A.

Tagliavini’s directorial debut in 2001, “The Woman Every Man Wants,” has earned her numerous awards, including director honors at the New York Independent Film Festival. She helmed VH1’s “30 Days Until I’m Famous” last year.
