Bernal, Luna launch Canana in Mexico City
GUADALAJARA, Mexico –Thesps Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna have launched a shingle in Mexico City.
Dubbed Canana after the crisscrossing bullet belts worn by Mexican revolutionaries, company includes former MTV exec Carlos Meza Yazpik and Barcelona-based Mexican producer Pablo Cruz as partners. Shingle will be headed by Meza.
“We hope to make two films a year for a start,” said Meza, adding the first pic would be in the $3 million-$5 million range.
Canana will focus on Mexican- and Latin American-themed features, and it is on the lookout for international investors.
Bernal’s first English-language pic, “Dot the I,” is in limited release in the U.S.
He is attached to Paramount U.S. pickup “Babel,” which reteams him with “Amores perros” helmer Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and scribe Guillermo Arriaga.
Bernal recently drew critical nods for his perf in Pedro Almodovar’s “Bad Education” and Walter Salles’ “The Motorcycle Diaries.”
Luna appeared in Steven Spielberg’s “The Terminal” and toplines Warner Independent Pictures release “Criminal.”
He appears next in Mexican-Brazilian co-production “Solo dios sabe,” from Disney Latino label Miravista, and is attached to Luis Mandoki’s drug drama “Amapola,” an Altavista co-production.
Thesps previously worked together in Alfonso Cuaron’s hit “Y tu mama tambien.”
